Thinking about this post, and looking back, the only time I really remember being this terrified was when I when back to school after a two year reprieve; it was after dropping out of high school, no less. I started community college. It was an 8am class (biology that early in the morning is never something I’d look forward to). I remember smoking a quick cigarette before walking into the building, almost hyperventilating, my fears towering over me higher than the building.

This is definitely something I need to work on. I think your article reminded me of that, but I don’t think I would’ve had the courage to say “I’ll do it” if I were in your shoes that night. Wish I could “just do it” :)

Inspiring post, thanks Brad. I remembered that things look much harder before we actually try to do it till the end, and you must be sincere with yourself. It’s a pity there isn’t a Toastmaster in the city I live in. Seems like a good challange. :)

I remember my first four guest appearances at toastmasters and how when I finally got up, nerves, sweaty palms, heart palpitations, I uh gulped and started answering the question, which I don’t recall - but what I do remember is that I cried through the entire two minute table topic - I was that scared. IT is only scary until you do it. Man why is it so difficult to remember that when facing something new? Thanks for the reminder Brad.

Thanks all. It’s nice to hear the sound of a chord being struck. :)

Brad, congrats on your Toastmasters success! I’m still attending as a guest, but I’ve already had two Table Topics speeches. Your blog actually was one of the influences that had inspired me to “go out there” and face my fears, Toastmasters included!

Nice one, Artem. Initiative is rarely a mistake.

To put fear into perspective….that which we fear the most will repell and paralyze us or cause the opposite effect, pushing us forward into action or reaction divde and conquer.

Makes sense.

Excellent article! I am the President of a Toastmasters club in Vancouver, BC. I’ll definitely pass this out to our current members to remind us why we joined and to push us a bit more. Also I am considering giving this as a hand out to guests as well. Hopefully it will help give them that little extra push to join. Thanks! Post a comment
