Talk to at least one stranger every day

by bradb, completed 11 months ago

Walking up to people you don't know and striking up conversation is the social equivalent of skydiving. It's fun, interesting, and risky.

I want to make a habit of being more social, and I'll do that by talking to at least one stranger a day. I figure that after 30 days of doing this, it'll become second nature.

I'm adding this goal a little late. I've already been implementing it for almost two weeks. I've met a ton of cool people so far.

This isn't the first time I've done this type of thing, but it's always insanely interesting and, literally, life-changing. You realize that people don't bite. You realize that it's actually really easy to meet people. And when you constantly expose yourself to social pressure, you start to become a social genius.

I've experienced a wide range of reactions, from being told to "Fuck off" (several months ago), to walking up to an adorable girl and her friend in the park, and having them be giggly and receptive from the moment I sat down.

Ah, the joy of living dangerously.

I'm going to call this one done, even though I'm only half-way through the 30 days. I've already met dozens of people in just a couple weeks after making a point to go out every day, and way surpassed the objectives behind talking to one person per day.

But I will definitely take up this habit again if I ever feel myself slipping back into the "self-induced repression" of knowing that I wanted to say hi to someone but chickened out.

I would seriously recommend EVERYONE take this challenge and report on your progress!
