Learn to play Go

by bradb, completed about 1 year ago

For the longest time, I've been interested in learning Go:

But I've usually held back, citing lack of time. But perhaps with effective time management, I can accomplish all my not-Go related things in the day and still have enough time to dedicate to seriously improving at this game.

So, no matter what, I want to commit to this for 30 days and see how it goes.

Next actions:

  1. update my projects.txt to include Go goals
  2. play at least 1 game every day
  3. study at least 1 hour every day

Well, after about a week of doing this, I can already see Go is becoming the "intellectual fuck buddy" that I referred to in the article "Interest vs. Commitment".

In my chess playing days, I was fiercely motivated to compete and win because it filled an emotional Grand Canyon in my life at that time. But I don't feel driven to win competitions and trophies of any kind anymore, at least not at this point in my life. I'm much more strongly motivated by creative self-expression and large-scale, life-changing contribution, and the ability to do both in an exciting and sustainable way.

I find that having Go on the side is distracting me from doing my best possible work with 30zzz, and I don't think it's the ideal use of my time compared to, say, being a writer and software development busker.

I can easily see why people devote their lives to games like Go, but unfortunately I've gotta cut it loose.
